Youth Digital Wellbeing Initiative: YouTube Shapes a Safer Future for Kids

YouTube’s decision to make the platform a responsible place brings vast changes that no one ever imagined. Remember when Lisa Nandy, UK culture secretary, urges YouTube & other platforms to promote better content for children? Her wish is now a reality! Know what YouTube is up to this time to make the platform a better and safer place for kid users.

What Is YouTube’s Youth Digital Wellbeing Initiative?

YouTube has partnered with kids’ studios, broadcasters, and educational organizations to prioritize high-quality content while limiting the reach of low-quality videos. Not just that, YouTube is also planning to go international and raise the industry standards of kids’ content across multiple languages.

YouTube collaborates with companies that create content in different languages. This includes channels across the world, such as Animaj, Benesse, ChuChu TV, Japan Football Association, Khan Academy, leader Entertainment, Mauricio de Sousa Produções, TV Cultura, and others. This program was approached by YouTube under the name of ‘Youth Digital Wellbeing Initiative.’

The whole purpose of the program is to divert kids towards high-quality content that inspires and educates them about media literacy and digital citizenship. That gives them a conscience of understanding what content should be trusted and what needs sheer avoidance.

The first approach YouTube takes is restricting content for users below 18 through YT age restriction feature deployment. This was to save kids from watching inappropriate and mentally damaging content and social violence. The other one was in the last season in September, when YouTube added a new supervisory tool for parents to monitor teen users’ activity on the platform.

Even recently, having had this concern for a long time and being concerned over daughters’ online habits of watching anything, Lisa Nandy has also appealed to YouTube to keep a watchful eye on children’s content on YouTube.

Conclusion

YouTube’s Youth Digital Wellbeing Initiative is an approach to making YT a safer place for kids and a credible platform for parents. As a parent, you must be careful of what kind of content has been served to your kids for their protection. Lately, YouTube has also taken action against the YT gambling content and ads being shown on YouTube. The platform ensures no kid encounters something harmful, and now is your time to make a move!
