YouTube Cracks Down on Gambling Content with New Policy

YouTube wants to make the platform a safer place for its users. Hence, YouTube has changed its gambling content policies to make the platform more responsible for young viewers. Here’s what you shouldn’t miss as a creator who uploads gambling content.

What’s Changing in YouTube’s Policy On Gambling Content?

Starting on March 19th, YT is strengthening its existing YouTube policy of gambling content to protect viewers.

As a user, you must have run into advertisements that direct viewers to gambling websites and applications. Based on the recent update to the policy, YouTube doesn’t allow redirection to any website or app if they aren’t certified by Google. This can include URLs, images, text, visual displays, or embedded YouTube links.

In addition to this update, YouTube is also restricting gambling content for users under 18. Content that doesn’t violate community guidelines but has content relating to online gaming and casinos will be age-restricted for young users on YouTube. But this doesn’t apply to sports betting and depictions of in-person gambling. Plus, users operating signed-out versions of YouTube won’t have access to gambling content.

There are lots of creators whose content is based on casino-related content, and this update will undoubtedly impact their YouTube channels. “We know this update may impact creators who focus on online wagering content like casino games and applications, but we believe these changes are necessary to protect our community, especially younger viewers,” YouTube quotes, explaining why this step was necessary.

Conclusion

YouTube gambling content is never appreciated, if I am honest with you all. Of course, YouTube wants the platform to be a responsible and safer place for creators and users, hence coming up with new updates.

In the overview of Neal Mohan’s YouTube vision 2025, he announced that they will soon test a machine learning model to gauge the viewer’s age. It will help YouTube understand the user’s age and decide what content to recommend. Let’s see when that rolls out!
